What is happening now will destroy the infrastructure of science as we know it. It is, as I wrote, the difference between a sledgehammer and a giant car-crusher. It is time to think about what we want to happen, what should the new look like as the old is destroyed, and how do we get to that vision?

Well yes. But we need a vision to make better use of the funding. And also, we did not have govt funding until after WWII, There were and are foundations and charities and directed work. I was once funded from the March of Dimes for work on fruit fly development. We need a different mix, and also a different sense of what science is and why people should support it with their tax and charitable $$
